[Update] Korean Drama: My ID is Gangnam Beauty | นักแสดง my id is gangnam beauty – PINKAGETHAILAND

นักแสดง my id is gangnam beauty: คุณกำลังดูกระทู้

My ID is Gangnam Beauty is a Korean Drama which aired back in July 2018. However, I only managed to watch it back in January when I was off for Christmas Break so forgive me that this review is coming so late. I was pleasantly surprised by My ID is Gangnam Beauty even though my trustworthy friend recommended it to me. I thought it was your typical Korean University drama that relied on a love triangle, but it was so much more with the themes and messages it builds upon throughout each of the episodes.

PLOT AND THEMES

My ID is Gangnam Beauty is based on the webtoon of the same name which was published in 2016 by Naver. It focusses on the life of college student Kang Mirae who went under cosmetic surgery due to the bullying she suffered from as a child. However, her surgery is a success, and she looks beautiful. But when she enrols into college, she is faced with many difficulties, a blossoming romance and in some cases ridiculed by her artificial look.

In general, I liked the overall plot of the drama. It was entertaining, easy to follow and definitely kept me watching. I enjoyed the different character arcs we were able to follow and how they were all linked to the central theme of beauty. Although the plot comes across as quite light-hearted being set in a university/college setting it actually deals with a lot of issues around the standards of beauty. It looks into how society treats people because of beauty standards and weaves all these issues incredibly well into the story. This is successfully done through the use of Kang Mirae’s flashbacks at how she was treated when she deemed unattractive by society. But even when she does get plastic surgery it does not fix everything, yes she is pretty, but she can’t help but still judge people by their looks, and she is still hyper-aware of everyone else’s beauty.

The drama primarily really highlights just how people obsess over beauty today, and it is possibly linked towards the beauty standards in Korea today too. I’ve read up that its not unusual for students to ask as there graduation present from there parents that they want to have plastic surgery! The most common piece of plastic surgery that people often get double eyelid surgery. Plus the name of the drama alludes to the Korean word gangnammi-in Gangnam beauty which is a derogatory term in South Korea for people who have had a lot of plastic surgeries.

CHARCATERS

The characters of My ID is Gangnam Beauty all have complex and distinct roles that all link towards the main theme of beauty in this drama. They are your typical character tropes in a K-Drama but its the themes and issues that the drama explores that really make them shine in there roles.

The main female lead of My ID is Gangnam Beauty is Kang Mirae who is played by Lim Soo Hyang. Mirae is an insecure and timid character, and this stays with her character throughout the majority of the story. Despite having plastic surgery she was previously bullied throughout her childhood, so she has a lot of emotional and psychological things that she has to overcome. For example how she is so hyperaware of everyone else’s beauty and rates others on their beauty. She was a sympathetic character because even though she gets many compliments on how pretty she is, has the boys chasing after her she is still insecure in her own skin. It shows showing beauty isn’t everything, you can change what you look like, but you really can’t change who you are. It was enjoyable to follow Mirae throughout the genre and watch her grow as a character. I particularly liked the scene when she finally stands up for herself in front of Soo Ah and questions why they must be like this and why beauty is such a competition for her.

Do Kyung Seok takes the role of the cold male lead and is played by Astro’s very own vocalist Cha Eun Woo! I defiantly liked his character because even though he was distant and cold, he was also straightforward and unafraid to call people out. Essentially he is a realistic character overall, what you see is basically what you get with him. Although, with this character trait there are downsides which was the fact he did come across as a bit bland at times with not much duality to him. It would have been nice to see a tiny bit more emotion from his character.

But, I enjoyed learning a bit about him and the fact he is dealing with some complex family issues, this allowed us to get a glimpse of emotion from him, and it was integrated relatively well into the plot. Also from very early on as well, we see he is drawn to Mirae and of course can tell it’s her. There were a lot of mini moments where he steps in to help Mirae but what was interesting is that he gets Mirae to question her own mindset. He also encourages her to stand up for herself and stop being nice to people all the time because not everyone has good intentions.

Jo Woo Ri is Hyun Soo Ah who is another student at the college. However, she causes problems for Mirae during her time there. So Ah came across as manipulative and two-faced but she also suffers from the same expectations of beauty that society holds. Although she is considered to be a natural beauty, there is pressure for her to always remain on the top and this leads to her diet pills, depression and even bulimia. Soo Ah feels like she has to prove herself as being the most attractive and she always feels like she has to be in competition with other girls. For example when Tahee was going out with Ta Young Soo Ah hinted that she might have liked him which wasn’t the case she just wanted to steal the guys’ attention and ensure she is the prettiest, not anyone else. Soo Ah was definitely an interesting and strong character to explore because she had loads of layers to her and there was definitely something more to her.

ROMANCE AND RELATIONSHIPS

Kyung Seok and Mirae made such a sweet couple. Mirae is entirely oblivious and has such a hard time believing that Kyung Seok would like her despite his very obvious actions. Kyung Seok likes Mirae before she even likes him and before Mirae can even allow herself to accept her feelings towards Kyung Seok.

Kyng Seok’s and Mirae’s relationship progresses reasonably slowly, and it is quite a wait before they become an official couple. But there are so many lovely little moments that they have on the way. I honestly loved how Kyung Seok never cared about what Mirae looked like before her surgery to what she looks like now as he said to Mirae “you’re just you.” He doesn’t like her for what she looks like he just likes her for just being herself and that is the sweetest thing ever. Kyung Seok is respectful of Mirae and her decisions, and they simply matched perfectly with each other. I was rooting for them as a couple, and any Korean Drama that does that is a good one in my books.

Mirae’s relationship with Hyung Jung was another aspect of My ID is Gangnam Beauty that I liked. I loved how supportive and accepting Hyun Jung was of Mirae and that she is not judgemental or jealous of Mirae’s surgery. I do wish that we got a little bit more screen time of there friendship because I did enjoy seeing the two of them on screen together. There is also Kyung Seok and Woo Young’s slow blossoming friendship which was fun to watch too.

But the highlight of relationships for me was the one Mirae had with her parents. They are so proud of there daughter both pre and post surgery, and although her dad is upset at first, his anger is resolved and he expresses his love for his daughter in the cutest ways.

THE VERDICT

My ID is Gangnam Beauty is a robust Korean Drama with great relationships, characters but also deals with a greater theme and issue of societies standards of beauty. Both Korean Drama and Webtoon have a clear message to bring to light that beauty is not everything, in fact, the pressure to look a certain way has so many terrible consequences for an individual. Whether you are male or female, it’s important that we accept ourselves just as Kyung Seok said at the end of the day ‘you’re just you.’
